Home court proved the charm Saturday as the SHAPE Spartans and Lady Spartans dumped their Division I and Region I rivals from the International School of Brussels. SHAPE’s boys victimized ISB, 38-34, for their first victory of the season, while the Lady Spartans avenged an overtime loss on Friday with a 34-25 victory over the Lady Raiders.

SHAPE’s boys had the most reason to celebrate, as Ryan Valentine’s game-high 15 points and Ryan Howard’s game-high 10 rebounds fueled the Spartans’ first victory of the season. Fabio Petrocchi added 11 points and Nick Westrick six points and eight rebounds to the triumph which upped SHAPE’s record to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in Region I.

Tim Owen led ISB (4-1 overall and in Region I) with eight points and five rebounds.

Friday in Brussels, ISB’s boys withstood a 23-point second quarter by the Spartans and earned a 56-44 victory that extended SHAPE’s season-opening losing streak to six games.

Steve Clark scored 18 points and Mario Jacobs 13 for the winners, who got a team-high eight rebounds from Owen. Owen also scored eight points. Howard, who led SHAPE with eight rebounds, and Tinos Panidas each scored 13 points for the Spartans.

The Lady Spartans , who got double-figure scoring on Saturday from Gina Rhett (16) and Theresa Muldoon (11) endured a night of frustration Friday in Brussels. After blanking ISB in the third quarter, SHAPE led 17-10, but the Lady Spartans were unable to score themselves thereafter. ISB posted a 7-0 fourth-quarter run which forced overtime, then blanked the SHAPE 3-0 in the extra period for a 20-17 victory.

Rhett topped SHAPE in that one with 10 points.

Saturday was a 180-degree turn for SHAPE (3-4, 1-1), however. The Lady Spartans posted an 18-10 run in the second half to put the game away. Ashley Feiler’s 10 rebounds were instrumental in the win.

ISB (4-1, 4-1) got a team-high nine points from Lucy Wallenstein.

Next up for ISB are games at Lakenheath on Friday and Saturday. SHAPE travels to AFNORTH on Friday and hosts the Lions on Saturday.
