Senior running back Steve Sablan proved to be too much for the Guam High Panthers to handle in Saturday’s Interscholastic Football League season opener at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam.

The Father Duenas Memorial back rushed 14 times for 142 yards and scored three times to power the Friars past the Panthers 29-6 in a game originally scheduled for Friday but pushed back a day because of wet grounds at Andersen.

Guam High played the Friars to a scoreless deadlock until just before halftime, when quarterback Jesse Garcia tossed a 21-yard touchdown pass for Sablan’s first touchdown.

Sablan then broke free from two tackles for a 44-yard touchdown run on the Friars’ second third-quarter possession.

The Panthers cut the gap to eight points when sophomore quarterback Cameron Yecki bulled over from 1 yard out.

Sablan answered with a 4-yard touchdown on Father Duenas’ next possession and Michael Cruz provided insurance with a 22-yard TD run.

Guam High next tangles with the two-time defending champion George Washington Geckos on Friday at Mangilao.
