Jimmy Montfluery threw touchdowns passes of 18 yards to Sterling Frost and 10 yards to James Stovall on Saturday as Rota erased a 12-0 first-quarter deficit to claim a 20-12 European D-III semifinal victory at Hohenfels.

Hohenfels took the lead on runs of 3 yards by Mike Tillberg and 65 yards by All-European selection Dameon Odum.

Jeff Shelton ignited the Rota rally by scoring from 4 yards out on a fake field goal try in the second quarter. Montfluery threw touchdown passes in the third and fourth quarters.

Tyrell Boddie had two sacks and Shelton intercepted two passes for Rota (6-1), as the defense stiffened after giving up the early scores. R.J. Curley and Chris Alexander also played key roles in the stand, according to Rota coach Robert Stovall.

Odum’s long touchdown run accounted for a big chunk of his 163 yards on 11 carries. Johnnie Mesch had a pass interception and a big return for Hohenfels (4-3).

In Saturday’s other D-III semifinal:

Baumholder 26, Vicenza 19: At Baumholder, the Bucs (6-1) moved into the title game against Rota at its home field behind 152 rushing yards and three touchdown runs by Artrell Davis.

Davis rushed for two scores, and then broke a 75-yard kickoff return for another touchdown after the Cougars had cut the gap to 12-7 on Mickey Stoner’s 31-yard pass to Xavier Taylor in the second quarter.

Vicenza (4-3) clawed to within 20-19 on two third-quarter touchdown runs by Kyle Kaus before the Bucs put the game away with a 15-play, fourth-quarter drive capped by Trust Davis’ 1-yard run.

Kaus finished with 96 yards on 11 rushes and Stoner completed nine of 17 passes for 109 yards.
