RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany - Ramstein fullback Jon Groteleuschen bulled over on the Royals’ second play from scrimmage Saturday to cash in on a Lakenheath fumble, starting a 48-9 rout.
Groteleuschen later added another rushing TD and grabbed a touchdown pass as the defending D-I champs improved to 2-0 with an offensive output of 430 yards.
In addition to his scoring toss to Jon Groteleuschen, Ramstein quarterback Steven Grondheim connected with Spencer Sandifer and Drew Groteleuschen for TDs.
Junior halfback Desmond Rush took care of the ground game, rushing for 156 yards and a TD while subbing for injured tailback Caleb Guerrido, according to Ramstein coach Carlos Amponin.
“I was worried because Guerrido was on the sidelines,” Amponin said of his starter, who gained 129 yards in the Royals’ 23-7 victory over Kaiserslautern the previous week. “Then Rush stepped in and showed us what he could do.”
Lakenheath (0-2) scored on an 85-yard kickoff return and a 35-yard field goal by Adam Garcia to get as close as 41-9 late in the game, but junior defensive back Jeremiah White extended the winners’ margin with a 30-yard interception return for a TD as the clock ran down.
Ramstein travels to England on Saturday for a battle of the unbeatens at Filton; Kaiserslautern is scheduled to visit Lakenheath the same day.
