Injuries and eligibility issues forced Matthew C. Perry to call off Friday’s Japan Football League game with Robert D. Edgren at Misawa Air Base, Japan.

“We only have 12 players,” Samurai coach Kevin Crone said. “Taking the safety of the kids in mind, we determined we would have to cancel this game in an effort to get ourselves ready” for an Oct. 4 game against Zama American.

It was not immediately known if Friday’s game would be played at a later date or whether it’ll be listed as a forfeit or a non-event.

DODDS-Japan district superintendent Bruce Derr said Thursday by e-mail that he was concerned about Perry’s ability to continue playing.

“I’m concerned that Perry may not be able to field a team during the remainder of this season,” he said.

Both teams, with rosters full of youthful, inexperienced players, were 0-2 and had been outscored by a combined 183-19.

Edgren’s home opener will now take place Oct. 4 against four-time defending JFL champion Yokota.
