Inside presence Julius Johnson-Rich and his double-digit scoring took the day off to for the college SAT, but Justin Phelps and brother Justin Johnson-Rich took up the slack Saturday as Patch completed a two-game sweep of visiting Black Forest Academy and moved into sole possession of first in the Region III standings.

Phelps scored 18 points, grabbed seven rebounds and pulled off six steals, and Johnson-Rich tallied nine points and seven rebounds as Patch shrugged off an 0-for-12 start from the floor to prevail 53-40.

The victory, aided by 29 BFA turnovers, improved Patch’s record to 9-1 overall and 7-1 in Region III. Combined with Heidelberg’s 59-53 loss at Hohenfels on Saturday, the sweep puts Patch one game ahead of Heidelberg in the Region III standings.

According to Patch assistant Shawn Phelps, Patch endured a 30 percent field-goal shooting outing, including just 2-for-14 from beyond the three-point arc. Patch won the game on the free-throw line, converting 19 of 31 opportunities for the game and 14 of 20 in the final quarter. John Gonzalez, who finished with 13 points and eight rebounds, led the way by going 7-for-10 from the line.

In Friday’s 58-48 victory, Phelps scored 13 points to lead four Panthers in double-figures. Julius Johnson-Rich, Dylan Measells and Gonzalez each had 12.

In other boys games of note:

Hohenfels 59, Heidelberg 53: Saturday at Hohenfels, the Tigers rebounded from Heidelberg’s 26-8 third-quarter run to regain the lead in the fourth and earn a weekend split with the Lions.

Miguel Chestnut scored 21 points, and newcomer Jamie Tompkins added 19 in the game of runs. After a reasonably even first quarter, Hohenfels, which fell 68-65 to Heidelberg’s fourth-quarter rally on Friday, seemingly put Saturday’s game away at halftime, 33-17, only to see Heidelberg go ahead 43-41 after three periods.

Xavier Moore and Marcel Simon led Heidelberg on Saturday with 14 points each.

Ramstein 73, Mannheim 33: Friday at Ramstein, Brandon Oxendine’s double-double — 14 points and 13 rebounds — proved the highlight of a courtesy-rule game that set up a home-and-home showdown against neighborhood rival Kaiserslautern for the Region II title.

Thomas Amrine’s 16 points led Ramstein (8-1 overall, 5-0 in Region II), which is scheduled to visit Kaiserslautern (4-0 in regional) Tuesday night and host the Red Raiders on Friday.

Kaiserslautern 70, Wiesbaden 61: Friday at Wiesbaden, Bernard Burwell scored 17 points and came away with 27 rebounds to for the Red Raiders.

“K-town may only have seven players, but every one can play,” Wiesbaden coach Carl Johnson said in an e-mail. “They should surprise a lot of teams.”

The victory completed a two-game sweep that began with a 89-52 Red Raider home victory Tuesday.

Aviano 81, Milan 18: Saturday at Aviano, five Saints scored in double figures in limited playing time as Aviano wrapped up the Region IV title with a 12-0 overall and league mark.

Sean Outing, Shaheed Seaton and freshman Zack Erskine each scored 12 points, and Darious Fields and Jamal Tuck each added 10.

Freshman Robert Lee pulled down 10 rebounds, and Outing registered seven steals and six assists for the defending European Division II champions, who led 35-3 after one quarter.

Things went as badly for Milan on Friday. The Panthers trailed 33-1 after one quarter and lost 70-12.
