Yokota cross-country star Daniel Galvin’s season is over.

The leading runner in the Pacific was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the lower right shin and was told by his doctor not to run until the end of November, runner and his father-coach Dan Galvin said.

“He’s crushed right now,” the elder Galvin said. “We had some very big plans for Far East and beyond. I guess those will have to happen in track” come the spring.

The Pacific’s record-holder in both the 800 and 1,600 appeared to be on his way to a record-setting cross-country season.

He posted a Pacific-best 16 minutes, 8 seconds in a 3.12-mile race at Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni. Last month, he became just the fourth runner ever to run under 15 minutes at Tama Hills Recreation.

The injury apparently ends any chance Galvin had of running in Saturday’s Kanto Plain finals, the Far East meet Nov. 3-4 and in USA Track’s national finals in New York on Nov. 27.

Galvin’s closest Kanto rival expressed disappointment that the Panthers junior won’t be at Far East.

“I was really looking forward to competing with him because he’s a great runner and our times would all get faster,” said Evan Yukevich of American School In Japan. “But I wish him the best of luck for his recovery.”

Galvin’s father said the doctor assured them that the bone will heal “nicely and he’ll be good to go in five to six weeks.”
