OSAN AIR BASE, South Korea – Jaylin Barmer played as well or “even better” than advertised, coach Aaron Mundy said, in Humphreys football’s season opener. But other stars also put their best foot forward as the Blackhawks began the 2015 season in style.
Barmer scored all three times he touched the ball, Bashr Edmonds scored once each on the ground, in the air and on defense and the Blackhawks posted eight touchdowns on just 19 opportunities in a 56-6 romp over Osan.
“He was impressive tonight,” Mundy said of Barmer, a transfer from Pennsylvania who rushed only three times Friday, but for 132 yards on touchdown runs of 55, 65 and 12 yards.
Edmonds added a rushing touchdown of 17 yards, caught a 30-yard scoring pass and returned an interception 49 yards for a score. Jordan Holden also returned an interception 24 yards to the end zone, while Miles Brice ran 4 yard for a score. The Blackhawks had 212 yards on just 14 offense plays and 382 all-purpose yards.
“We’ll take that,” Mundy said. “I challenged the offensive line to perform....They are young and inexperienced. I’m proud of the offensive line. I’m happy for them.”
Edmonds, a junior, showed he’s more than just a basketball player, Mundy said.
“He’s an exceptional athlete,” Mundy said. “He’s shifty. A lot of kids whiff when they try to hit him. He’s a fantastic kid. He never shuts up, which can be a good and a bad thing. He’s a high-energy kid.”
Mundy credited his defensive assistants for the Blackhawks’ success on pass coverage. “They had the team ready,” he said.
Osan’s only score came in the closing seconds, as Aaron Misner and Chris Moore teamed to block a punt, then Misner bulled 2 yards for a score in the final minute.
“We were not executing, we were not fundamentally sound,” Cougars coach Don Tusha said.
Humphreys next travels to Daegu for a 5:30 p.m. kickoff on Friday.
“They’re the king. They’ve been the king for many years,” Mundy said of the Warriors.
Osan get the week off, then hosts Samsung, a Korean high school team, on Sept. 19.
