MANGILAO, Guam – Guam High suffered its third straight defeat, 28-12 to Southern, making the Panthers’ next three games vital if they’re to return to the Guam island playoffs next month.
But the Panthers showed signs of life against the Dolphins, vital for Guam High as it heads down the home stretch of its schedule against three teams with sub-.500 records, coach Billy Henry said.
Isaac Amaguin caught a 13-yard touchdown pass from Tyler Krueger to give the Panthers a 6-0 edge. Receiver turned quarterback Rai Johnson hit Amaguin with a 4-yard scoring strike to cut the Dolphins’ lead to 20-12 in the final quarter.
“We improved in all areas,” coach Billy Henry said, citing the Panthers’ initial first-quarter drive in which they kept the ball almost the entire period.
“We tackled a lot better, our offense flowed really well,” Henry said. “The thing we’re still working on is our cornerbacks, being able to defend against the pass. But that’s fixable, 100 percent.”
Nathan Estevez ran for 187 yards and three touchdowns for Southern, which improved to 3-0 on the season.
The Panthers next face Simon Sanchez at 7 p.m. Friday at John F. Kennedy High School’s Ramsey Field in Upper Tumon.
