MARINE CORPS AIR STATION IWAKUNI, Japan – Kameron Ramos and Matthew C. Perry have sealed host rights to the Far East Division II football final Oct. 24. The question being, who will they play?

Ramos sparked the offense with 238 yards on 15 carries with five touchdowns, then the Samurai (4-0) pulled away with 21 fourth-quarter points Friday as they downed Robert D. Edgren 47-26.

“The kid’s got heart. He’s the heart and soul of our team,” Samurai coach A.J. Edwards said of Ramos, a senior who entered the game with 449 yards and five touchdowns on 27 attempts and, and 97 passing yards and two TDs through the air.

Ramos also passed for 40 yards Friday. Jeremiah Wardrobe and Jacob VanSickle each scored touchdowns and Kelton Clark had 12 tackles to lead the Samurai defense.

Though the final score appeared one-sided, the Eagles (1-3) kept it tight, trailing by but a touchdown after three periods despite losing starting quarterback Jayden Botoy to a left-shoulder injury five minutes into the game.

“They (Eagles) put up a good fight,” Edwards said. “They were definitely a force to be reckoned with. A lot of respect for them. They made it a competitive game and we appreciate that.”

Edwards credited the team’s heart for the 21 straight fourth-quarter points. “They step up to challenges, they step up to adversity, they continue to have each other’s backs, pushing forward, believing in each other, the man next to him making it happen. And they did,” he said.

The Eagles stayed in it despite losing Botoy, with senior Haruki Jones and freshman receiver Braylon Brown doing much of the heavy lifting.

Jones rushed 15 times for 75 yards with a touchdown and James Hopkinson ran 35 yards for a score. Christopher Weber caught a 25-yard touchdown pass and Ren Dick a 45-yard TD pass.

Brown finished with 125 yards on five catches. “Today was his day,” coach Hoa Nguyen said. “This was a big day for him. We kept it close, but without our quarterback, it was tough for us. We ran out of gas by the time we got to the fourth quarter.”

The two teams face each other again Friday at Misawa Air Base, a makeup of a game postponed earlier this season due to transportation issues.

Then, it’s a matter of who Perry faces in the championship, and it hinges on next Saturday’s game pitting Osan at Yokota.

Should Yokota win, the Panthers go to Perry for the final for the second straight year on Oct. 24, but if the Cougars win, then Zama gets the visitor’s berth.
