Derrell BrunnerBasketball Guam High

Last week: Averaged a double-double in three games as the Panthers made their first appearance in the Independent Interscholastic Athletic Association of Guam boys basketball tournament championship game. Guam High lost a heartbreaker 52-50 to St. Paul Christian at the University of Guam Field House on Saturday. Brunner, a junior All-Island selection, had 12 points and 15 rebounds in the final. In Tuesday’s quarterfinal, he had 16 points and 11 rebounds as the Panthers routed John F. Kennedy 59-33, then 11 points and 10 rebounds in Thursday’s 40-35 semifinal victory over Southern. Coach Joe Taitano called Brunner’s averaging a triple-double “an amazing feat for any athlete.” “Derrell is an outstanding athlete and has contributed immensely to the success of our basketball program this season. Derrell is a fine young man and is well-liked by many,” Taitano said.

Elizabeth FabilaSoccer Kubasaki, Okinawa

Last week:Scored all six goals for the Dragons in two victories over FC Unai, a Japanese club team, over the weekend at Kubasaki’s Mike Petty Stadium. The victories helped last season’s Far East Class AA tournament runners-up improve their record to 3-0 this season, and Fabila has scored seven goals in those three matches. Fabila, a freshman and a veteran of the island’s under-14 developmental program, the Okinawa Diplomats, scored three goals, including the match-winner with seven minutes left, in a 3-2 victory Saturday. She matched that feat with three more goals as Kubasaki beat FC Unai 3-1 on Sunday. “She works hard. She has a natural inclination for the attack position,” Dragons coach Terry Chumley said. “She has an eye for the goal. She can finish.”
