Two clinics for sports officials are scheduled for this week in the Heidelberg, Germany, area.

The first, for volleyball officials, will be Tuesday through Saturday at Morale, Welfare and Recreation’s Center for Workforce Development in the nearby suburb of Schwetzingen, according to Tom Hlavacek of MWR.

Clinic participants will be instructed on rules and rule changes, step-by-step procedures on officiating and serving as a lines judge, and game control. Both veteran and new officials are welcome, Hlavacek said, with those completing the course expected to return to their installations and provide instruction to others.

Leisa Jordan and Kathy Ferraiaccio are this year’s clinicians. Both are certified by the Professional Association of Volleyball Officials and by USA Volleyball, and work college-level games in the SEC, Big East, Conference USA and other conferences. In addition, Ferraiaccio is a contributing editor to the current rule book.

Student officials will finish the week by officiating Saturday at the IMCOM-Europe Volleyball Preseason Tournament at Patton Barracks in Heidelberg. There will be competition for men, women and mixed teams.

To register for the clinic, contact Hlavacek at DSN 379-6438 or (+49) (0)162-234-0800, or by e-mail at tom.hlavacek@us.army.mil. Teams wishing to enter the tournament, for which there is no entry fee, should contact Tom Benson at DSN 373-8032 or by e-mail at thomas.c.benson@eur.army.mil.

The other training session is a one-day clinic for flag football officials in the Heidelberg-Mannheim area. It will be 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday in Building 128 on Patton Barracks, according to Benson.

The clinic will certify new and experienced officials to officiate unit- and community-level flag football games this season. Call DSN 373-8032 in Heidelberg or DSN 385-3164 in Mannheim to register.
