STEEREBEEK, Belgium—The Bamberg Barons opened their second season of nine-man football by scoring on their first two possessions and cruising to a 40-13 win over Brussels Saturday in a Division-III game.

Brussels, which got 123 rushing yards from Kristian Javier, scored on its first possession of the second half and on a 32-yard pass from Hayden Pfefferkorn to Daniel Helbling with 12 seconds left in the game.

Bamberg, the 2011 D-III runner-up, travels to Sigonella on Saturday; Brussels will take an 0-2 record into its next game, Friday at Baumholder.

Rota 44, Alconbury 0: At Naval Station, Rota, Spain, K.C. Mason ran for one touchdown, passed for a second and fell on a fumble in the end zone for a third score Friday night to propel the defending European Division III champion Rota Admirals to a courtesy-rule victory over the Dragons.

Cody Holland hauled in Mason’s 45-yard TD pass and also fell on a fumble in the end zone in the game which was called at halftime by the 39-point courtesy rule.

Ramon Quijano also found the end zone for the Admirals, who improved to 2-0 going into this Friday night’s game against visiting Menwith Hill. Alconbury (0-2) returns home for a Saturday non-conference game against the Woodham Warriors of the English league.

Menwith Hill 43, Woodham 14: At RAF Menwith Hill, England, senior quarterback Schuyler Backlar passed for one touchdown and ran for another, and Alex Abing broke two long TD runs Saturday to propel the Mustangs to a non-conference victory over the Warriors of the English league.

“They loved getting a chance to play nine-man football,” Menwith Hill coach Pete Resnick said of his guests. “They usually only get to play four- or five man ball. They also loved the cheerleaders, the atmosphere and having a full crew of officials who knew the rules.”

Backlar passed 35 yards to Damon Morris for one TD and ran two yards for his second to lift the Mustangs to a 29-14 halftime lead. Morris had scored Menwith Hill’s first TD on a five-yard run, but the big play of the half came when Abling broke loose for an 85-yard TD on a sweep.

Abing broke a 40-yard scoring run after intermission, and Adrian Knight tacked on Menwith’s final TD on a 25-yard scamper.

Next up for Menwith Hill (2-0 overall 1-0 in D-III) is a Friday night showdown at Rota. Woodham is scheduled to visit Alconbury on Saturday for another taste of the American high school football experience.

Billy Hobson ran 40 yards for one of Woodham’s TDs; Chris Armstrong threw a 36-yard TD pass to Jack Curry for the other. Both plays came in the first half.
