RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany – Lakenheath’s Lady Lancers made clutch free throws down the stretch Saturday to claim their first victory of the season, 41-39, over the Ramstein Lady Royals.

All-European senior guard Shaionica Speight scored 16 points, and Jasmin Walker added 12 to the winning total. Lakenheath, which led 23-19 at halftime, trailed by six points at the start of the fourth period, according to an E-mail from Ramstein coach Nate Brewster, but “…Ramstein got into a little foul trouble, and Lakenheath put on some pressure to tie the game and then take the lead with free throws in the last minute of the game.”

Ramstein fell to 0-3 overall despite eight points, nine rebounds and four steals from Sarah Szybist; eight points and seven rebounds by Allison Shelton, and six points, five rebounds and five steals by MacKenzie Crews. Ramstein will try for Victory No. 1 when the Lady Royals host Bitburg on Wednesday in a Region II game.

Lakenheath (1-2 overall) was coming off a 40-28 loss Friday night at unbeaten Kaiserslautern.

Walker led the Lady Lancers’ scoring in that one, with eight points, but K-town took a 21-12 halftime lead and was never headed despite seven points from Speight and six from Kat Bice.

Lakenheath is scheduled to host ACS-Cobham on Wednesday, then play a return game at Cobham on Saturday.
