RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany — Marymount International School of Rome’s girls soccer squad waited until late in the game Saturday to score. But then its other goals came in a flurry.

The Lady Royals won the Division III girls championship with a 3-1 overtime win, beating cross-town rival American Overseas School of Rome by scoring twice in the extra 10-minute period.

Marymount’s Elena Carrarini, who scored two of the goals, was carried off on the shoulders of her teammates after the game.

"It’s so great," said Carrarini, the Division III girls tournament MVP. "It’s amazing. I can’t believe it. I’ve got loads of emotions right now."

Teammate Martina Diana got the third score.

Though Marymount didn’t score until the 68th minute, it controlled the game for its entirety. Even while behind 1-0 for most the game, coach John Searle said he was confident that if his team kept playing how it was, it would win.

"I’m very, very pleased for the girls," he said. "This group of girls deserved to win."

AOSR scored in the game’s 27th minute when Fiore Masera launched a beautiful arcing shot from the right wing over the head of the Marymount goalie, who was helpless to stop it.

In the second half, Marymount had several scoring opportunities, getting numerous good looks off Carrarini corner kicks. But it wasn’t until the 68th minute mark that Carrarini finally got her team on the board, knotting the score at 1-1. She nearly scored a minute later when she took a free kick from the top of the penalty box, but her shot soared high.

In overtime, Marymount had five shots on goal to AOSR’s one.

In the 86th minute, Carrarini broke free and received a pretty pass, which she put in the back of the net for the Lady Royals’ first lead. The Marymount bench started doing cartwheels, literally.

Diana then wrapped things up by dribbling from midfield all the way to the AOSR goal, maneuvering past two defenders on her way to scoring.

"I saw only two people in front of me so I said, ‘Let’s go,’" Diana said after the game.
