KADENA AIR BASE, Okinawa — Kadena Youth Sports and Fitness has been chosen for an Excellence in Youth Sports Award.

The National Alliance For Youth Sports and Athletic Business magazine presented five of the awards this year to a field of 9,000 organizations being considered. Kadena’s award comes with $5,000 to enhance the youth sports program.

The award is presented to organizations that “conduct diverse youth sports programs that focus on providing positive and safe experiences for all participants,” according to 18th Services officials.

“Kadena Youth Sports and Fitness has done an outstanding job with its youth sports programs and is very deserving of this award,” said Fred Engh, the magazine’s founder and president. “It has demonstrated a strong commitment to the well-being of children and has embraced the importance of providing training to volunteer coaches, parents and league administrators.”

Youth Sports Director Lori Phipps said the staff works hard to nurture children’s capacities to learn while enjoying team sports, and to learn values such as kindness, helpfulness, personal responsibility and respect for others.
