WIESBADEN-NORDENSTADT, Germany — For the second straight year in the DODDS-Europe high school tennis championships, unseeded Isabelle Ignacio of Baumholder highlighted the first day of the three-day event by knocking off a seeded opponent.

“It was exciting,” Ignacio said after dumping No. 8 Martina Diana of Marymount International School of Rome 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 Thursday.

“I had never played her before. I had to figure out what she was doing before I could adjust my game,” said Ignacio, who finished fifth in the tournament last year. “Basically, we were playing the same game at first.”

Ignacio capped her day with a 6-0, 6-0 quarterfinal victory over an opponent she had defeated earlier this season, Black Forest Academy’s Haelee Kim.

Ignacio’s reward? A semifinal Friday against top-seeded and undefeated Krista Citkovska of SHAPE.

As she has in every match this season, Citkovska, the defending champion, won her Thursday quarterfinal at love over Brianna Fitch of Brussels. She swept Ignacio when they played Oct. 20.

“I’d like to get a game off her,” Ignacio said. “Last time, I hit a lot of balls into the net. This time, I’ll try to move her around.”

Ignacio was the only singles player of either sex to beat a seed.

Both No. 1s, defending champions Citkovska and Nick Garcia of Heidelberg; both No. 2s, Kara Williamson of International School of Brussels and Sean Stokstad of Ramstein; and both No. 3s, Lindsey Jones of Ramstein and Edouard Van Der Mersch of ISB, drew byes into Thursday afternoon’s quarterfinals.

The top six then beat their six quarterfinal foes by an aggregate score of 72-8, with Mannheim’s Jade Vaughn getting seven of those games in her loss to Jones.

The seeds held in doubles, too, with all the ranked duos earning first-round byes or victories. Form held in the early doubles quarterfinals, too, leaving all the excitement to Ignacio and the two singles entrants from first-time competitor Bahrain. No. 6 Eman Yousif stopped Amanda Wiggins of Würzburg 6-1, 6-0 and then reached the semis with a 6-0, 6-1 conquest of Ashley Martin of Naples. In the boys competition, unseeded Moeez Ali put away Alex Gonzalez of Aviano 6-3, 6-0 before falling in the quarters.

Play resumes at 8 a.m. Friday at the Vitis tennis center here, the Hochheim tennis center in nearby Hochheim and the Medenhalle in Wiesbaden. The singles semifinals are scheduled for the Vitis facility at about 2 p.m.

Championship rounds for singles and doubles are scheduled for Vitis on Saturday. There is no admission charge.
