Hohenfels girls fall just short of D-III berth
HOHENFELS, Germany — Hohenfels’ Danielle Green had 43 points and 20 rebounds on Saturday, but a 53-51 loss to Ansbach kept the second-seeded Lady Tigers out of the Division III high school basketball championship.
Hohenfels needed to win against Ansbach in the final game of the Division III-South tournament, but its loss puts Baumholder in the championship.
Ansbach took an early lead, scoring nine points before Hohenfels took a foul shot.
By the end of the second period, however, Hohenfels led 34-27. Green had 30 points in the first half.
In the third quarter, Ansbach closed the gap and Hohenfels never led by more than three the rest of the quarter.
In the final minutes, Ansbach scored four straight points to break a 49-49 tie and retained a lead.
“Ansbach has a good team,” said Hohenfels coach Tim Peveler. “I thought we were going to pull it out. We fought hard; you could tell these teams were the top two seeds in the tournament.”
Ansbach and Baumholder are the two Division III-South teams advancing to the girls’ championship in Mannheim on Feb. 19 and 20.
Boys Div. III-South tournament
Ansbach 52, Giessen 51
Ansbach and Giessen battled to the final seconds of their Division III-South tournament game to see which team would advance to the Division III championship in Mannheim.
Defending champion Bamberg had an automatic berth in the championship, so the winner of Saturday’s final boys’ tournament game earned the second spot for the south division in the championship.
Although Giessen had a 13-6 lead in the first quarter, Ansbach’s offense surged, taking a 44-34 lead by the end of the second quarter.
Giessen’s offense responded in the third quarter and had closed the gap to three points at the start of the final quarter.
With two minutes remaining, Ansbach led 50-48 and ran 30 seconds off the clock before a personal foul and two successful free throws put Ansbach ahead 52-48.
Giessen scored three more points in the final 30 seconds but finished one point short.
Ansbach and two-time defending champion Bamberg advance to Division III boys championship play Feb. 19-20 in Mannheim.
