The defending European Division I champion Heidelberg boys and the Patch Panthers completed Region III sweeps Friday and Saturday to set up a showdown for the regional title this week.

Heidelberg, behind 21 points and eight assists from their All-Europe transfer from Mannheim, Sam Rosario, thumped visiting Vilseck 74-54 on Saturday for its 19th straight victory, and Patch outgunned Hohenfels 60-37 on the road Saturday to set the stage for a Tuesday night elimination game at Patch.

The Panthers (11-1 overall, 9-1 in Region III) trail Heidelberg (12-0, 10-0) by a game in the regional race and must win Tuesday to stay alive for the league title. If they do, Friday’s night’s game at Heidelberg will be the decider.

Patch 60, Hohenfels 37: Saturday at Hohenfels, Dylan Measells scored 11 points and collected seven rebounds to lead Patch over their D-II hosts.

Heidelberg 74, Vilseck 54: Heidelberg, which prevailed 61-54 on Friday by opening the second half with a 15-0 run, also benefited from 13 points and 14 rebounds from Maurice Simon.

In other boys’ games of note:

Menwith Hill 54, Alconbury 51: Saturday at Menwith Hill, Schuyler Backlar, who burned Alconbury for 29 points and 27 rebounds in Friday’s 60-53 victory, canned a three-pointer with 33 seconds left Saturday to cap Menwith Hill’s rally from a 15-point deficit after three periods.

Backlar, who sat out much of the third period with four fouls, according to Menwith Hill coach Greg DeJardin, hit the shot to give his team a 53-51 lead, the Mustangs’ first since the early seconds of the second period. He finished with 19 points, 12 rebounds and six steals.

Ramstein 71, Wiesbaden 40: At senior night Friday at Ramstein, the Royals’ 2012 graduating class accounted for 60 of the team’s 71 points, according to Ramstein coach Andy O’Connor.

All-Europe senior guard DeVonte’ Allen led the way with 27 points for the Royals, who clinched the Region II title the previous weekend. They are 10-2 overall and 9-0 in regional play going into Friday night’s game at Kaiserslautern.

AFNORTH 57, Lakenheath 46: Saturday at Lakenheath, the Lions earned a split with their D-I hosts behind 16 points and seven rebounds by Jake Schmidt and 12 points each from Nuri Karaca and Jamil Pollock.

Lakenheath closed its regular season 8-6 overall, according to coach Alan Campbell, and 4-2 in regional play. AFNORTH, which is scheduled to play at Brussels on Friday, is 11-2 overall.

Kaiserslautern 60, Baumholder 54: Friday at Kaiserslautern, double-figure scorers Derryk Scarvers (13 points) and Marquis Grant, Devin Joseph and Andrew Stern (10 each) paced K-town to a 9-4 overall mark. They’re 6-3 in the region going into Friday night’s home game against Ramstein.

Baumholder fell to 6-6, 3-5 in spite of 13 points from Tahrell Harris and 12 from William Wilson.

Naples 74, Sigonella 30: Saturday at Sigonella, the snow-induced layoffs of the past two weeks did Naples no harm as the Wildcats completed a two-game sweep. Nigel Alexander, who scored 18 points in Friday’s 66-39 victory, burned the Jaguars for 26 on Saturday.

His teammate, D.J. Stockman, added 13 points on Friday and 18 on Saturday to help Naples improve to 9-1 overall and in Region IV. The Wildcats are scheduled to close the regular season this weekend against visiting International School of Florence.

Sigonella, which next is bound for the European D-III tournament Feb. 22-25 at Wiesbaden, completed its regular season 6-8 overall and in the league.
