The Far East High School Tennis Tournament began Wednesday morning at the Ninete and Tiyan Tennis Centers on Guam amid temperatures soaring to around 90 with high humidity.

“The weather is definitely a challenge,” said coach Rick Kendall of Japan’s E.J. King Cobras, in a phone interview from the Ninete Tennis Center in Hagatna.

“It’s a big difference,” he said, adding that while teams from Okinawa “probably fit in pretty well … the kids are saying they can’t believe the weather. Mine have two water bottles with them on the court and they’re saying it’s not enough.”

There also were passing showers, which interrupted play for about an hour. That, plus lengthy matches, forced the Yokota-Pusan boys quarterfinal match in the new Davis Cup-style team format to be pushed back to Thursday.

Thursday’s girls team semifinals pitted Seoul American against Osan American of Korea and Kadena against Nile C. Kinnick of Japan. The boys semifinals pitted Seoul American against the Yokota-Pusan winner and Kinnick against Kadena.

Nguyen felt Seoul American and Kinnick had “the best chance overall,” he said. “They have more depth.”

Depth is a key in the new format, which was altered slightly at the pre-tournament coaches’ meeting Tuesday.

Initially, teams were required to play all four of their players, two in singles and the other two in doubles, in the first round, but then could choose after that, playing their two strongest players if they so desired. That was voted down by the coaches.

“You don’t bring them down here to not play two of them,” said Kendall, who raised the issue at the meeting.
