ANSBACH, Germany — A three-pointer by Ansbach’s Lauren Finley with 2 minutes, 50 seconds remaining gave the Cougars a 32-30 lead Saturday and neither team scored after that as Ansbach’s girls basketball team completed a weekend sweep of visting Baumbholder and improved its record to 4-1.

On Friday night, Finley scored 16 as Ansbach rolled to a 36-14 victory against the Lady Bucs, now 0-5.

Despite the dominating performance Friday, the Cougars need a little luck Saturday to pull off the sweep because of some poor shooting, according the Ansbach coach Michael Lee Hunt.

“A win like that involves luck all the time, so we got lucky,” Hunt said after Saturday’s win. “The game was closer than it should have been.”

“We have to improve on our shooting — we are just missing too many easy shots. We have to get better at that.”

Saturday’s game remained close throughout with both teams going on small scoring runs only to have the other team answer with a small run of its own. Anbach led 16-15 at halftime and tied it at 23 at the end of three quarters.

Finley led the Cougars Saturday with 14 points and 14 steals, several leading to crucial momentum changes. Baumholder was led by Dianna Marcus in both games; She had 10 points and 20 rebounds Friday and 17 points and 18 rebounds Saturday.

Baumholder coach Jonathan Westehorstmann saw improvement in his young team despite the two losses.

“We are very young and inexperienced, but they fought well,” he said. “They learned from their mistakes yesterday, missed a lot of outside shots. Ansbach is a very well-coached team and they played smart.”
