YONGSAN GARRISON, South Korea — Hours of early morning practices in the pool paid off this weekend as youth athletes from across the peninsula competed in a swim meet.
More than 90 swimmers, ages 7 to 19 and representing Yongsan Garrison, Osan Air Base and the Daegu-area military community, spent Saturday and Sunday in the pool during the final summer swim meet.
The biggest team, Yongsan, dominated the team competitions as its 56 swimmers scored 6,889 points. Twenty-four swimmers on the Osan squad snagged 2,279.50 points and the 14 Daegu swimmers earned 1,872.50 points.
Tournament officials said two of the races were “absolute nail-biters,” with only hundredths of a second separating the competitors.
Each swimmer was allowed to compete in no more than eight individual events and three team relays.
