DARMSTADT, Germany — The final Frankenstein Castle Run, an event that began 30 years ago, will be Oct. 12.

The 13-kilometer run goes from Cambrai-Fritsch Casern in Darmstadt up a steep finishing hill to Frankenstein Castle, which many believe inspired Mary Shelley’s novel “Frankenstein.”

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on race day, with the starting gun going off at 10 a.m.

The first 27 races in the series were organized by Darmstadt’s 440th Signal Company and held annually except for the unit’s deployment years of 1996 and 1998. Darmstadt’s community recreation division took over the race two years ago.

With the expected closure of the Darmstadt military community next year, this run will be the final one.

There is no entry fee. For details, call DSN 348-1550 or 06151-69-1550 or e-mail frankensteinrun@eur.army.mil.
