For a basketball player, Lynette Grant has proven herself adept at spiking a volleyball.

The Taegu American middle blocker “took over at the net,” Warriors coach David Hagander said, scoring 15 kills and 11 block points in a five-set victory over Taiwan’s Morrison Christian Academy, which put Taegu within two victories of their first Class A title.

“She’s come alive,” Hagander said, adding that the entire team has played their roles well. Setter Lindsey Jackson “has been solid. So have Ashley [Gooch] and Tina [Wojtonik], and Kelli Cox has been strong at the net.”

What worried Hagander was having to face a Notre Dame team from Guam that had its ups and downs during the three-day round-robin phase, but has come out “as advertised” in the double-elimination playoffs. Notre Dame is Taegu’s opponent in Friday’s winner’s bracket final.

“They cover the floor really well,” Hagander said of Notre Dame. “We’ll have to crush the ball against them, because if you dink it or tip it, it’s coming back over. They’re so consistent. They do everything right.”

The Guam team dispatched Osan American to the loser’s bracket with a three-set victory, including 25-0 in the third game. Osan is still alive in the tournament after beating Pusan American in an elimination match.

Osan was to play Faith Academy in the loser’s bracket Friday.

Seisen gets jump on Seoul American in Class AA

Four straight jump serves in the second set by Seisen senior Yuri Koshibe sent the Tokyo international school to Friday’s semifinals and the Seoul American Falcons crashing out of title contention in Class AA.

“The minute she jump serves, the intimidation factor set in at that point,” coach Denny Hilgar said after the Phoenix swept the Falcons in Thursday’s quarterfinal. “Seisen is tough. They covered everything.”

Meanwhile, inconsistency and nerves seemed to be the undoing of Japan’s Yokota Panthers in a three-set quarterfinal loss to defending champion Academy of Our Lady of Guam.

“Everybody just got too uptight,” senior setter and captain Darlene Seeley said. “Everybody was focusing on mistakes and getting down on themselves, instead of how we were going to come back. We’re a textbook example of an up-and-down team.”

Both the Falcons and Panthers were still alive for a shot at fifth place — they were to play Friday morning — and Yokota already had made enormous strides after finishing 15th last year.

“Our original goal was to get in the top eight,” Panthers coach Bonnie Seeley said. “That’s still reachable.”
