In their first DOODS-Europe high school baseball games, Western Region rivals Kaiserslautern and Bitburg split a doubleheader Saturday at Kaiserslautern.

Christian Randolph came on in relief of starter Michael Cossaboom with one out in the top of the sixth and final inning, and retired the side to give Kaiserslutern a 7-6 victory in the opener. Bitburg came back from an 8-1 deficit in the second game to claim a 10-9 verdict in the nightcap, according to K-town coach Tom Burriss.

Both teams pushed across two runs in their final at-bats to nail down their victories, Burris said.

K-town, which got two-hit efforts from James Bailey and Randolph, scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 7-6 lead and make a winner of Cossaboom, a right-hander who struck out five and walked just one in 5 1/3 innings.

Notley Reavis took the loss, despite allowing just three hits in his two innings of work in relief of starter Tyler Tucker. He was victimized for five unearned runs.

Austin Schmidt got the win in the nightcap, allowing one run and striking out two in the inning he pitched. Starter Matt Less, who went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in two runs, struck out five and walked four in his three innings pitched. He gave up four runs, two of them unearned.

Freshman left-hander Zachary Jones took the loss in relief for the Red Raiders. He was touched for two unearned runs.

Ramsey Oakley hit a two-run triple for K-town.

In other games on Day 1 of DODDS-Europe baseball:

Patch 25-12, Wiesbaden 0-1: On Saturday at Dexheim, Justin Phelps pitched a no-hitter and hit a grand slam in the opening game called after three innings by the run rule. Games end when one team is ahead by 15 or more runs after three innings and 10 or more after four.

Wiesbaden committed 12 errors in its first-ever varsity game.

In the nightcap, Patch struck for eight runs in the first innings en route to the Panthers’ second shortened victory of the day.

Bamberg 19-16, Ansbach 1-11: Saturday at chilly Ansbach, the home team yielded 19 walks in the teams’ run-rule-shortened Eastern Region opener.

Winning pitcher Anthony Lestoch went the three-inning distance, surrendering three hits, striking out two and walking one. Lestoch banged out two hits and drove in a run to help his own cause, according to Ansbach’s Marcus George.

Bamberg’s Ryan Mecillas picked up the victory in the nightcap, allowing nine hits and striking out three.

Vilseck 19-7, Mannheim 0-4: Saturday at Mannheim, Kyle Krajcovic tossed a three-hit shutout in the opener, and Jared Austin and Roberto Miranda combined to five-hit the Bison in the nightcap.

According to Vilseck coach Jim Hall, Krajcocvic threw 43 of his 56 pitches for strikes and struck out seven of the 17 batters he faced in the opener. He also doubled and singled in three at-bats.

Will Ponares drove in four runs in the first game; Kaden Baum doubled twice in three trips to the plate.

In the nightcap, Vilseck benefited from nine walks, Hall said. Krajcovic drove in two runs to aid the victory.

Heidelberg 10-15, Hohenfels 6-12: Saturday at Heidelberg, Heidelberg starters Jamal Pope and Ben Jackson picked up the victories, but not without plenty of drama and help.

Pope left Game 1 after pitching three hitless innings and leading 9-0, only to see Hohenfels rough up freshman reliever Ben McGee for six runs, according to Heidelberg assistant coach Tom Saunders. Starting catcher Chris Williams came on in relief of McGee, and retired the Tigers without a run the rest of the way.

Jimmy Montfleury and Jon Kliner each were 2-for-3 for Heidelberg in the opener.

In the nightcap, Heidelberg posted an eight-run first inning, but Hohenfels touched Jackson for five runs in its half of the first. Heidelberg led 15-9 going into the bottom of the final inning, but Hohenfels cut its deficit to 15-12 before Pope came in with the bases loaded and one out. Pope put out the fire by striking out the two batters he faced.

Heidelberg’s Will Domko and Stefan Steen, and Hohenfels John Leon and Bryce Cooper all were 3-for-4 in the nightcap.
