Tyrell BoddieFootball

Last week: Jimmy Fluery’s TD pass to Jeff Shelton in the waning minutes of Rota’s 17-6 victory Saturday at AFNORTH established the margin the Admirals needed to make the European D-III playoffs, but according to coach Robert Stovall, his team wouldn’t have been in position to advance without the work of junior defensive tackle Boddie.

“Tyrell, who had been out all season, impacted the game more than anyone,” Stovall wrote in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes. “He made two fumble recoveries, and a huge hit and tackle on the 4-yard line to give us the ball on downs near the end of the game.”

Stovall added that Boddie, injured during a season-opening loss to Baumholder, provides more than turnovers and run-stopping ability for the Admirals, who travel to Hohenfels for this week’s semifinal game.

“His leadership on and off the field make a huge difference,” Stovall concluded.

Last week: Walcott, a junior middle hitter, totaled 34 kills, 11 blocks, 14 aces and three assists Friday and Saturday as the defending European Division III Lady Admirals went 3-1 during a two-day foray to Brussels. They claimed straight-sets victories over Alconbury and defending D-IV champion Brussels on Friday and over Menwith Hill on Saturday, before concluding an exhausting weekend by falling to D-II SHAPE.

Walcott, a first-team All-European in 2006, is “playing better this year than last,” Rota coach Judy Scarbrough said by phone. “She’s hitting the ball better.”

Scarbrough said her team has raised its level of play — including wins over Spanish teams this year, something it hasn’t done before. And much of that credit goes to Walcott. “She’s a great team leader,” Scarbrough said. “She’s a member of the National Honor Society and president of the student council. She’s just an All-American girl.”
