RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany – The back-up quarterbacks stepped in nicely Saturday to carry the Ramstein Royals to a 47-10 Division I victory over the Filton Pride.With starting QB Lucas Mireles suffering an injury Thursday at practice, coach Carlos Amponin alternated seniors Brennan Lege and Dylan LePage at quarterback. LePage responded by rushing for 126 yards and three touchdowns; Lege was seven-for-12 for 96 yards and a TD.“I sent the play in with each of them,” Amponin said of his alternating use of his two senior signal-callers.LePage got the Royals started with the first of his three TD runs in the first quarter, but Filton equalized on an 80-yard TD pass to Ryan Nestor to take the lead.Nestor, who posted two long kickoff returns for the Pride, was a thorn in Ramstein’s side for much of the first half, Amponin said. He credited Nestor with more than 100 yards on returns in the half which Ramstein led just 19-10.Ramstein flashed some return power of its own, however, in Robert Navarro, who himself broke the 100-yard return mark and rushed for a TD. Gabriel Moreno returned an interception 75 yards for a touchdown in a demonstration of broken-field running to help the Royals to their 28-0 second-half bulge.Lege completed just seven passes for the ground-loving Royals, but six of them earned first-downs, Amponin said, keeping the muscular Pride off the field.“They were big, but my guys are fit,” Amponin said. “We out-conditioned them.”Ramstein (1-0) faces an early D-I showdown this Saturday at Vilseck. Filton (0-1) is scheduled to host Lakenheath on Saturday.
