BAUMHOLDER, Germany – Ramstein’s two-time defending European D-I champion Royals and the rapidly improving Lady Royals collected Region II basketball victories Wednesday night. The Royals, behind a team-high 20 points from Joel Wetlesen, downed their hosts, 80-64. The victory followed the Lady Royals’ 40-point, courtesy-rule, 53-13, conquest of the Baumholder Lady Bucs.Wetlesen chalked up his 20 points, and All-Europe guard Thomas Amrine added 18 in a game which got out of hand early for the Bucs (3-9 overall, 1-7 in Region II). En route to winning for the sixth straight game, Ramstein (9-2, 6-1) jumped ahead 24-11 at the end of the first period.“We failed to contest their outside shooters …Amrine, Jarrod Henry, DeVonte Allen … (and) Wetlesen,” Baumholder coach Jack Woodford wrote in a Wednesday night E-mail. “…As a team the Royals definitely can shoot the long ball. (Amrine) had three alone, one in the second quarter and two in the third.“Ramstein’s ‘bigs’ were especially tough to defend, slamming dunks and turnaround hooks in the paint. We were too short to man up Ramstein and too slow to play them zone.”Two Bucs reached the 20-point plateau, Woodfork reported. Tahrell Harris tallied a game-high 24 points, along with 15 rebounds, and Alexander Johnson scored 21 points, but despite the efforts of those two, the Bucs were seriously outgunned.“We staged a few comebacks,” Woodfork concluded, “but midway through the third it was apparent that we could not stop the Royals’ inside-outside punch. They’re an excellent team with a lot of weapons.”The Lady Royals, who got a game-high 16 points from sophomore center Sarah Szybist, led 20-6 after one period and 36-11 at the half en route to their fifth straight victory. Megan Campbell led Ramstein (6-5, 6-2 in Region II) with seven rebounds, and Allison Shelton posted five steals and three rebounds.Dionna Marcus scored all 13 of Baumholder’s points, along with grabbing 12 rebounds and pulling off three steals, according to Lady Bucs coach Tim Kelly. Baumholder is 1-11 overall and 1-7 in regional play.
