HEIDELBERG, Germany – Three free throws made the difference Saturday in lifting the Patch Panthers to a 75-73 overtime victory and a split of their home-and-home weekend showdown with the Heidelberg Lions. Aaron Oliver sank the first of the clutch three charities. After clanking his first try off the front of the rim Saturday and with his team trailing 63-62, Oliver sank his second shot with three seconds to play to force overtime.Patch then turned to junior Dylan Measells. Measells scored four of his 17 points in the extra period, including two free throws with 19 seconds left that furnished the winning margin. Measells also pulled down six rebounds.Shaquille Hunter tied Heidelberg’s Stirling Thomas for game-scoring honors with 19 points for Patch (9-5 overall and 9-3 in Region III). Hunter’s teammate Justin Johnson-Rich, who scored 10 points, topped all rebounders with seven in Patch’s final game of the regular season. The Panthers next play in the European Division I tournament Feb. 23-26 at Mannheim.Chris Cuthbert scored 16 points, handed out four assists, made four steals and tied Jack Cannon for team-rebounding honors with five for Heidelberg (10-2, 8-2). The Lions, who are scheduled to close their regular season Friday and Saturday at Ansbach before joining Patch at the European D-I event, appeared to have the game in hand after a 22-11 third-quarter run put them up 46-38. But Patch responded by outscoring their hosts 25-17 over the final eight minutes.Saturday’s final period was a far cry from Friday’s game in Stuttgart, where Heidelberg expanded its 10-point lead after three periods to the final 17-point margin in a 58-41 victory.Thomas, who scored a game-high 17 points, handed out four assists and stole the ball twice, led Heidelberg. Marcel Simon and Cannon, who snared a team-high eight rebounds, each scored 11 points for Heidelberg.Hunter led Patch’s scoring list on Friday with nine points; Cohoes and Measells each tallied five points in the home-court loss.
