RAF ALCONBURY, England – Sculyar Backlar tossed second-quarter touchdown passes covering 13 and 68 yards to Ryan Reers on Saturday to lift the Menwith Hill Mustangs to a 12-8 victory over the Alconbury Dragons. The Backlar-to-Reers 13-yarder put the Mustangs ahead in the second period, but Alconbury, the 2010 European D-III runners-up, countered with a tackle-breaking 50-yard TD run by Justin Thibodeau and two-point conversion run by Vincent Lanphear to go ahead 8-6, according to Dragons’ AD Duke Eidt.Menwith Hill, however, went on top for good before halftime on the 68-yard scoring pass, and the Mustangs’ defense, led by Backlar, Reers, T.J. Busan and Alex Abing, who intercepted two passes, made the TD toss stand up.The game, a nine-man contest, was a non-conference affair. Alconbury opens D-III league play Saturday at Bamberg; Menwith Hill is to host Sigonella, which will be playing for the first time this season. The Jaguars, defending European D-III champs, were forced to cancel Saturday’s scheduled game at Rota because of too many injured players.According to Menwith Hill coach Pete Resnick, Menwith Hill’s all-conference tailback Lawrence Alston gained 57 yards in just four carries before leaving the game with an injury midway through the first period.
