Lancers score 30 straight to rally past Raiders
KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany -- The Lakenheath Lancers staged an epic comeback Saturday, scoring 30 unanswered points after halftime to claim a 46-31 Division I football victory over the host Raiders.
Kaiserslautern scored 24 second-quarter points and enjoyed a 31-9 lead late in the second quarter, seemingly on the way to a rejuvenating conference win. But Chris Hayden returned a kickoff 92 yards for a late first-half Lancer touchdown, setting the stage for the second-half dominance that would hand the home team a stunning loss.
Running backs Manny Cordero and Ion Duenas carried the day for Lakenheath. Cordero rushed 17 times for 183 yards and three touchdowns, while Duenas rushed 16 times for 133 yards and a touchdown. Lakenheath’s Joey Glenk recorded 11 tackles and Cordero contributed nine for a Lancer defense that held the Raiders scoreless after their second-quarter outburst.
Corey Coombs ran 28 times for 119 yards and a touchdown for Kaiserslautern, while quarterback Esteban Saldana threw for a touchdown and ran for two more. Solo Turgeon snatched three interceptions to highlight the Raider defense.
Lakenheath earned its second straight win to start the season, though the previous week’s defeat of Wiesbaden didn’t count towards playoff qualification. The Lancers host defending champion Stuttgart next weekend, while the 0-2 Raiders visit Wiesbaden.
