BRUNSSUM, Netherlands – Austin Morrow went 4-for-7 Saturday and pitched Lakenheath to a 4-3 victory over the AFNORTH Lions that completed a Western Region baseball sweep for the Lancers.Morrow’s victory, which followed Lakenheath’s 12-3 triumph in the opener, evened the Lancers’ season record at 2-2 and represented the first DODDS-Europe baseball victories for Lakenheath coach John Gilmore.Gilmore, who led Lakenheath to four European softball titles between 2000 and 2010, moved to baseball this season.According to AFNORTH coach Nate Goolsby, his lineup, which includes just three players who have ever played high school baseball, displayed its inexperience in the opener. AFNORTH pitchers walked seven and the team made nine errors in its first game of the season.AFNORTH learned fast, however, and cut its gap in the nightcap to just one run on a two-run homer over the center field fence by Jake Reynolds.Reynolds also impacted Game 2 on the mound, coming on in relief of starter and loser David Smith to post five strikeouts and allow just two hits in four innings of work, according to Goosby.AFNORTH will have to wait until Kaiserslautern comes to town on April 30 to see if its learning curve will increase its steep climb. Lakenheath (2-2) is to host Ramstein on April 23.
