The Heidelberg Lions soccer teams got off to strong starts Saturday as DODDS-Europe opened its final sports season of the school year.

It’s the final sports season that Heidelberg will have as the school is set to close when classes end in June when the U.S. closes its facilities in the city and shifts troops and families to Wiesbaden.

Andrew Guelle scored three times and Trevor Carr and Vincent Harrington added two goals each as the Lions boys topped Ansbach 11-0. Justin Rodney, Tim Sellman, Ian Hall and Alex Coles also scored for Heidelberg.

The Lions girls won 4-0 behind three second-half goals from Anna Miller and another by Layna Lowe.

There was only one other game Saturday. Vilseck coasted to a 7-1 victory over Schweinfurt in boys action. Sage Thornbrugh, Pierre Elysee and Alex Denikiewcicz each scored two goals for Vilseck and Mark Bussell added another.

Schweinfurt, a Division II school, is fielding a co-ed team this year that will play against boys opponents.

Six other games were canceled due to field conditions or poor weather. The spring sports season is expected to get under way at more locations next weekend, with soccer joined by baseball and softball. Track teams have their first competitions a week later.

The European championships for the four sports are set for May 20-25.
