HEIDELBERG, Germany - Justin Rodney ran for 68 yards and a pair of touchdowns Saturday to spark the Heidelberg Lions to a 27-7 Division I victory over the defending European champion Wiesbaden Warriors. The loss was the fourth straight for visiting Wiesbaden, which fell out of the playoff picture. Heidelberg (3-2) stayed in the hunt behind the running of Rodney, Andre Brown (14 carries for 52 yards and a TD), Danny White (12 carries for 48 yards) and Tim Cuthbert, who scored the Lions’ first touchdown when he scooped up a teammate’s fumble on the boundary and raced down the sideline to the end zone. Heidelberg coach Larry Daffin credited Cuthbert with 56 yards on six carries.“We just have not played well,” Wiesbaden coach Steve Jewell said by telephone on Saturday night. “Not to take anything away from Heidelberg – they played their hearts out and got tougher as the game went on – but when you lose several games in a row it gets into your players’ heads.”Dequan Reed ran for Wiesbaden’s TD in the first half, but was held to 14 yards on seven rushing attempts by the Heidelberg defense led by White. He posted 10.5 tackles.Dennis Ringgold led the Wiesbaden ground game with 88 yards; his freshman teammate, Keyshawn Greene, amassed 82 yards on 10 totes.Miscues hurt the Warriors, Jewell said.“We lost two fumbles, didn’t recover one we should have that Cuthbert ran for a touchdown, and snapped the ball over our punter’s head and gave them the ball on our five-yard line. They scored a touchdown.”Wiesbaden is to host Bristol on Saturday; the Lions will attempt to nail down a playoff berth against visiting Vilseck.
