BRUSSELS, Belgium – Brussels secured the inaugural Independent League title Friday night with a 40-14 win over Menwith Hill.

The Brigands are 5-0 entering the final game of the regular season and two games ahead of a field that includes second-place Woodham Academy, Menwith Hill and Lakenheath’s winless junior varsity squad. The league, devised after the demise of the small-school Division III ranks, plays nine-man football and does not have a postseason, instead crowning the team with the best regular-season record as champion.

That, unsurprisingly, is the Brigands, whose closest game of the season came on Sept. 14 in a 41-24 win over Woodham.

Will Cole totaled 250 rushing yards and three touchdowns for Brussels. Michael DeFazio scored on a run and on a 53-yard pass from quarterback Hayden Pfefferkorn. Greg Norton rounded out the Brussels scoring with a 4-yard touchdown run.

Brussels hosts the Lakenheath JV team Oct. 26.
