BITBURG AIR BASE, Germany – Notley Reavis and Austin Schmidt pitched the Bitburg Barons to 16-1 and 16-0 Western Region baseball victories Saturday over the first-year Alconbury Dragons.The run against Reavis, who struck out seven and walked just two in his four-inning, route-going performance in the opener, came when a fielder’s-choice grounder plated Chris Yerkes, who had tripled, Bitburg coach Christopher Moran wrote in a Saturday email.Alconbury held Bitburg to just eight hits in the opener, but walked 10 Bitburg batters. To compound Alconbury’s control problems, the Barons stole nine bases.Reavis drove in four runs in the nightcap to back Schmidt, Moran reported.Other batting stars for the Barons were Matt Flood, a combined 5-for-7 with a double and a triple; Evan Less, 3-for-3 in the opener; Schmidt, who finished the day a combined 3-for-5 with a triple, and Zach Nichols, who went 2-for-3 and stole four bases in Game 2.In its next outing, Bitburg will begin its Western Region drive in earnest. The Barons are scheduled to play in Kaiserslautern on April 23.Alconbury (0-4) has just as tough a job on the horizon. Next up for the Dragons is an April 23 doubleheader against visiting Ramstein, a D-I power which enrolls 1,000-or-so high school students to Alconbury’s 142.
