MENWITH HILL, England – All-conference quarterback Schuyler Backlar jumped into the opening of the Division III conference season with both feet Saturday, involving himself in seven touchdowns in the Menwith Hill Mustangs’ 59-20 romp over the defending European Division III champion Sigonella Jaguars.Backlar got into the swim of his day of torrential scoring on his team’s first play from scrimmage, completing a pass to Alex Aibing which resulted in an 80-yard touchdown. He then added six more TDs on the afternoon on touchdown runs which covered 32, 30, 12, five and three yards and a pass interception he returned 65 yards to the house.Ryan Reers, on a run of 24 yards which was set up by Dan Milam’s fumble recovery, and Josh Wilcox, on a 20-yard burst, also scored TDs for Menwith Hill, which was coming off a 12-8 road victory the previous Saturday over Alconbury. The Mustangs led 46-14 at halftime.Antonio Garcia scored two touchdowns for Sigonella, which was forced by injuries to cancel its scheduled game the previous Saturday at Rota.Garcia was on the receiving end of a 50-yard scoring pass from Chase Berryhill in the first half and ran four yards for the game’s final TD as the running clock ran was running out.Devonte Stevenson ran eight yards in the first period for Sig’s first TD of the day. By that time, however, the Jags, who next are scheduled to play at undefeated Rota, were four scores behind.Next up for Menwith Hill is a visit to D-III newcomer Bamberg. Both teams will take 2-0 overall and 1-0 conference records into that showdown.
