ANSBACH, Germany – The top seed in the DODDS-Europe Division II football playoffs cruised into the semifinal round Saturday.

The host Ansbach Cougars, unbeaten and unchallenged all regular season, continued that trend in the playoffs with a 55-28 victory over the Aviano Saints. The Cougars built a 48-8 lead through three quarters, prompting each team to sideline its starters and the Saints to mitigate the damage on the scoreboard.

But the damage was plentiful nonetheless, and inflicted primarily by the Cougars’ deep corps of running backs.

Roger Brownell carried 12 times for 91 yards and two touchdowns; he also caught three passes for 107 yards and touchdowns of 51 and 45 yards. Jamie Anderson rushed nine times for 78 yards and two scores while adding a defensive score on an interception return for touchdown.

Dorian Jones led all runners with 135 yards on 15 carries, scoring one touchdown. Zach Moore tacked on 44 yards from scrimmage in just two efficient carries.

Ansbach quarterback Bailey Ward was effective too, completing five of nine pass attempts for 138 yards, including the two scoring balls to Brownell. Nick Abel paced the Ansbach defense with 12 tackles. While overmatched eighth-seed Aviano didn’t threaten the upset, it did end its season with some points on the board against the juggernaut Cougars. Jamal Thomas scored a rushing and passing touchdown for the Saints, while Jackson Brennan caught a pair of touchdown balls late in the fourth quarter. Ansbach will host Vicenza next weekend with a title-game berth on the line.
