BRUSSELS, Belgium — Nuri Karaca scored 29 points and the AFNORTH Lions turned a close game into a rout in the fourth quarter during a 59-38 victory Thursday over the Brussels Brigands.AFNORTH, second in Region I at 8-2 and 10-3 overall, led only 33-28 entering the final quarter before outscoring the hosts 26-10. Jake Schmidt had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Lions, with Oguzhan Yabici and Jamil Pollock each scoring eight.Ryan Bottesini had 18 points and eight rebounds for Brussels, which fell to 4-7 and 4-11. Braden Bower added 14 points.In the girls game, Mercedes Ash scored 10 points and the Lady Lions got off to a fast start in a 31-22 victory.AFNORTH, 6-4 in Region I and 9-4 overall, led 14-4 after one quarter and never trailed after that. Sara Sawyer had five points, seven rebounds and four blocks.Cherie Crepeau (eight points) and Valerie Chausee (seven) led Brussels, which fell to 4-7 and 4-11.AFNORTH travels to Bitburg on Saturday to end the regular season before competing in the DODDS Europe Division II championships in Mannheim, Germany, next week. Brussels will compete in the Division III tournament at the same location.
