KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany — A merciless midgame rally by the Sigonella Jaguars proved to be the difference Friday as they surged past defending champion Vicenza to capture the DODEA-Europe Division II/III softball title with an 18-3 run-rule victory.

Despite the lopsided final score, the championship matchup initially appeared poised to be a tightly contested battle. Even before taking the field, the Jaguars knew the challenge the defending champions would present.

Sigonella sophomore Terra Love said the Cougars entered the matchup with a reputation that commanded respect.

“They’re very competent and it’s intimidating to other teams,” Love said. “They’re a very synchronized team.”

Vicenza struck first in the top of the opening inning when senior leadoff batter Nala Herron ripped a double to center field before later scoring on an RBI groundout from fellow senior Hennah Findlay to give the Cougars an early one-run lead.

Sigonella answered immediately. Senior Nyeema Fernandez beat out an infield single in the Jaguars’ first at-bat before stealing second and third base, setting up sophomore Izzy Ortiz for a line-drive RBI double to center field that tied the game.

“When I’m in the box, I’m just looking for contact, trying to move the runners around because that’s really all we need,” Fernandez said.

The Jaguars began to seize control in the second inning, capitalizing on three straight walks that loaded the bases with no outs.

Junior Vina Dimapilis scored on a walk before a groundout and sacrifice fly added two more runs to give Sigonella a three-run inning.

Vicenza refused to back down, answering with a two-run rally in the top of the third behind stolen bases by Herron and an RBI single from junior Peyron Atkinson to stay within reach.

Any hopes of a Cougars comeback quickly faded in the fourth inning as Sigonella erupted offensively.

The Jaguars repeatedly loaded the bases through patient at-bats and capitalized on defensive miscues to fuel a relentless scoring surge.

“I didn’t hit basically this whole season,” senior Addison Steele said, but the championship final told a different story.

Steele helped ignite Sigonella’s decisive rally after reaching on an infield hit before later driving in a run with an RBI single as the Jaguars’ lineup turned over.

Despite pitching and defensive adjustments by Vicenza, the Cougars were unable to slow Sigonella’s offensive avalanche as the game ended by mercy rule with the Jaguars’ 18th run.

Fernandez remained a force throughout the championship game, contributing three RBIs while anchoring the defense at shortstop with several key plays that helped preserve momentum.

“This whole season we were underestimated,” sophomore Isabel Ortiz said. “Everybody thought we were the bottom and we really showed them when we came through and we came out the top.”
