AVIANO AIR BASE, Italy — It won’t go down on any highlight reels involving the history of girls high school basketball.

But Naples’ 37-33 victory over Aviano on Saturday — coupled with a 47-42 Wildcats victory Friday night — will likely go down as the highlight of the Naples regular season in Italy high school basketball.

“I’ll take the win,” Naples coach Craig Load said. “It wasn’t pretty. That’s for sure.”

If recent history is any indication, the sweep should give Naples the regular-season championship in Italy, even though more than half the season is left to play. Naples and Aviano, which both entered the weekend unbeaten, have battled for the title every year since 2000.

Naples came back from a six-point deficit as player after player went to the bench with foul trouble for Aviano.

Michelle Aguila’s offensive rebound and basket with 1:34 left put the Wildcats up for good at 34-33. Mikal Willmer — who finished with a game-high 17 points — added two free throws a few seconds later, and the Saints didn’t score again. Four Aviano players fouled out of the game and two others finished with four fouls.

“We’re just so physical,” Aviano coach Laura Corder-Chavez said. “And in doing that, we let ourselves get out of whatever we’re trying to do.”

The first half was an extended free-throw shooting contest. Naples made 10 of 20 attempts, while Aviano hit seven of 21. Each team finished with almost as many turnovers as points. Naples had 36 and Aviano 29.

Michelle Brown added eight points and 13 rebounds for Naples (6-0). Willmer had 11 rebounds and two blocks. Kassie Mangosing and Mavis Sanders each had 11 to lead Aviano (6-2).

On Friday night, Willmer had 13 points and Renna Damon 11 to lead Naples.

Mangosing, with 14 and Cheri McNeely with 11 points and 12 rebounds, led Aviano.
