Last week - Kuheana, a 6-0, 195-pound junior running back, rushed for 181 yards and four touchdowns and gained another 66 yards on passes from J.J. Black on Saturday as the Dragons thumped Rota 46-6 to all but ensure themselves of a home game in the European Division III semifinals on Oct. 30.

Playing at linebacker in the D-III nine-man game, Kuheana also made 15 tackles, caused a fumble and intercepted a pass.

“Kerey had another big day on offense and defense,” Alconbury coach Jeffrey Black wrote in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes.

For all that, however, Saturday’s big offensive totals were a bit subpar for Kuheana, who’s averaging 270 yards per game rushing, according to Black. The coach said that Kuheana has rushed for 811 yards and 10 TDs in the Dragons’ three official games this season.

Last week - Thomas, a senior outside hitter/middle blocker, served 17 aces Saturday as the Lady Warriors dumped AFNORTH 25-15, 25-14, 28-26 to complete a sweep in weekend play. Earlier, Thomas, who was credited with four kills in each match, served six aces in a 25-16, 25-14, 25-13 defeat of Bitburg, according to her coach, Linnea Velsvaag.

“It’s scary. Nobody wants to be in the way of anything she hits when it’s coming down,” Velvaag said Wednesday by telephone. “She doesn’t serve any floaters.”

Velsvaag added that Thomas, a second-team All-European as a junior, was delighted with the rediscovery of her heavy serve. The previous week, Velsvaag said, Thomas appeared to be pressing too much in games against Division I contenders Ramstein and SHAPE.

“We went to hear a college recruiter talk,” Velsvaag said, “and it seemed to help her refocus on why she loves volleyball so much.”
