Baumholder High School

Last week: Crow, a 125-pound senior who placed third in Europe the previous two seasons, wrestled at 135 pounds on Saturday and won 5-2 against reigning European champion, Trey Fortunato of Ramstein. The victory upped his season record to 11-0, with nine of the victories coming by pins.

“On Saturday, David weighed in at 125, but he wrestled up two weight classes because he wanted some extra-tough matches to get ready for the postseason,” his coach, Mike Kieta, wrote Monday in an e-mail to Stars and Stripes.

Kieta said Crow plans to wrestle at 125 at Saturday’s sectionals at Heidelberg and the next week at the Europeans in Wiesbaden.

Saturday’s performance, which included two falls along with the decision, should serve him well when he goes up against the best in DODDS.

“We didn’t know how well he’d do at 135, especially against Fortunato ..., but I thought he would be competitive,” Kieta said.

London Central High School

Last week: Bennett, a 5-6 freshman who according to her coach, Mark Dix, plays “guard, forward, every position,” posted a triple-double Saturday — 19 points, 14 rebounds and an eye-popping 15 steals in a 49-26 victory over Alconbury. Bennett also blocked three shots.

The effort followed a 12-point, 10-rebound performance in a 38-33 win Friday over Alconbury.

But if the big numbers create the impression Bennett, who’s averaging 11.8 points, 6.6 rebounds, 5.9 steals and 1.5 blocks per game, hogs the ball, forget it, Dix said Monday in an e-mail.

“… with all of her talent, she is very unselfish,” he wrote. “There are times I wish she would be a little more selfish.”

Bennett’s big game on Saturday came in the last home game ever for the Lady Bobcats, who play at Menwith Hill this weekend and then in the European Division III tournament Feb. 21-24 at Mannheim. London Central will close for good in June.
