Derek DeanSoccer

Lakenheath High School

Last week: Dean, a sophomore whom Lakenheath coach Garrett Billington says can play anywhere, scored three times in his season debut Saturday, leading the Lancers to a 4-2 victory over visiting Kaiserslautern.

“He’s even good at keeper,” Billington wrote in an e-mail. “He will be a threat wherever we put him.”

Saturday, the Lancers used his talents in the attack. Dean scored both of Lakenheath’s second-half goals as the Lancers pulled away from a 2-2 tie at intermission.

“He is quick and can dribble and shoot with either foot,” Billington continued. “The fact that he is so versatile means that another player could be the scorer in the next game because of Derek’s defense or assists.”

The next game for the unbeaten Lancers comes Friday at unbeaten Ramstein. Lakenheath moves on to Wiesbaden on Saturday before returning home to close out the regular season by hosting Heidelberg on May 6 and unbeaten International School of Brussels on May 13.

Wiesbaden High School

Last week: Nieves, a junior shortstop known to her teammates as “Chi Chi,” went 8-for-9, slugged three home runs and drove in 11 runs in the Division I Warriors’ 21-5 and 33-0 sweep of Division II Mannheim in Darmstadt on Saturday.

“She was really on her game against Mannheim,” Wiesbaden coach Candie Lopez wrote in an e-mail of Nieves, who played for the powerful Patch program as a freshman.

“She is a player on whom you can rely both offensively and defensively.”

The Nieves-fueled sweep upped Wiesbaden’s record to 5-1 going into Saturday’s two-game test on the diamond of perennial Division I power Lakenheath.

Wiesbaden plays at defending European champion Ramstein the following Saturday and closes out the regular season by hosting Kaiserslautern on May 13.

Nieves’ bat and glove will be in the forefront in all of them, Lopez added.

“The team expects bigger and better [things] from her as the season progresses.”
