Spring hasn’t quite sprung in much of Europe and DODDS sports are paying the price.

Three of the four track meets scheduled for Saturday won’t be held as scheduled. All of the softball and baseball games outside of Naples won’t be played this weekend. And at least one soccer game had been postponed as of Thursday afternoon.

“In some areas, we still have snow on the fields,” DODDS-Europe Athletic Director Karen Seadore said.

In other areas of Germany, she said, temperatures are projected to be in the low 40s this weekend with a high chance of snow or rain.

DODDS-Europe has a policy that if teams travel by bus to a sports event and that event is canceled because of weather, it won’t be made up. The rule is designed to save money and time students spend outside the classroom, she said.

“The kids want to play, the coaches want to play. But as long as we have some options for re-scheduling, we’re going to use them.”

The only track meet still on was at Brussels, which is set to host SHAPE and the three DODDS schools from England. Softball and baseball games in Naples will feature the four DODDS schools in Italy playing each other in round-robin fashion over two days. Rain is forecast for both days.

The soccer schedule was largely intact, with two sets of boys and girls games set for Friday and eight doubleheaders Saturday.

Seadore, who spent much of Thursday trying to get events rescheduled and make sure schools were communicating with each other, said the spring season has been frustrating so far.

“I think we’ve had more cancellations this year than we’ve had in the 12 years I’ve been in this office,” she said.
