Bitburg captured the DODDS-Europe Division II softball crown, but not the way it had envisioned.

Bitburg was to play Patch for the championship Saturday after the two emerged from pool play with the best records. However, wind and rain delayed the start of the game.

When the coaches and umpires, concerned about the condition of the field and the fact Patch was missing a couple of players, conferred and decided to call the game and award the title to Bitburg, which had the better record in pool play.

Bitburg coach Daniel Vasquez said he was pleased with the outcome even though his team didn’t get to show its skills in the final game.

“I think it was legitimate,” Vasquez said of the decision. “We beat them twice in division play and once here.”

“We enjoyed ourselves this weekend, and had lots of laughs,” said C.J. Lalau, the Patch coach. “My two key players really, really wanted to play,” but she decided it was wiser not to.
