Jenny HoradonVolleyball

Naples

Last week: Horadon, a 5-foot-4 junior setter, posted 16 assists and served 11 winners Saturday as the Wildcats turned back visiting Vicenza 25-20, 25-20, 25-22.

"Jenny Horadon leads the way for the Lady Wildcats this season," Claudia Scherillo, in her first season as the Naples coach, reported in a Monday e-mail. "Playing in a new 5-1 offensive formation … Jenny has become the quarterback of the team by making quick and smart decisions."

Naples improved to 4-1 in league play, with the only loss coming to defending European D-II champ Aviano. Significantly, Scherillo pointed out, Horadon missed that 3-1 loss at Aviano on Oct. 4 because she stayed in Naples for college testing that day. "She is extremely athletic and an invaluable piece of the team’s success," Scherillo wrote of Horadon, who has 104 assists and 38 service winners this season.

Horadon is likely to up those totals Saturday in Rome against Marymount International and the American Overseas School of Rome, and in the European D-II tournament, to be hosted Oct. 30-Nov. 1 by the Kaiserslautern military community.

Danny CrusellasFootball

Naples

Last week: Crusellas, a senior playing football for the first time, bounced a 37-yard field goal attempt into the wind off and over the crossbar on Saturday to provide the winning margin, 19-18, in a do-or-die game with visiting Aviano. Naples moved on to the European D-II semifinals; Aviano’s season ended.

"Danny is a star soccer player," Naples coach Dan Dittmeier wrote Tuesday in an e-mail on Tuesday, "and I recruited him halfway through the season to spark our kicking game."

Crusella has kicked 40-yarders in practice, according to Dittmeier, but Saturday’s kick was his first successful try of the season. It came with 7:55 left and put Naples up 19-16, but according to Dittmeier, the Naples defense had plenty to do to make it stand up — two goal-line stands in the final four minutes and David Loudon’s interception on the Naples 4 with nine seconds to play.

"Danny is sure to be a factor this weekend when we go on a 20-hour bus ride to meet undefeated powerhouse Wiesbaden…," Dittmeier predicted.
