After Army kept a stranglehold for 12 years on the All-Armed Forces women’s basketball tournament title, Air Force is starting to build a streak of its own.

Air Force defeated the Marine Corps 80-33 and Army sank Navy 83-37 on Friday, the final day of the six-day tournament at Ventura County Naval Base, Calif. The airmen and soldiers each finished 5-1 but Air Force captured its second straight title because it outscored Army by nine points in their two tournament games.

Air Force beat Army 79-69 the first time they met on Monday, and Army prevailed 76-75 in their second meeting on Thursday. Army needed to beat Navy and hope Air Force lost to the Marines to regain the title.

An Okinawa-based soldier, Evevetta Crawford, was chosen for the 12-player All-Armed Forces team. Crawford, a sergeant assigned to Torii Station, averaged 13.3 points in Army’s six games, scoring a high of 17 on Friday.

Crawford and the All-Armed Forces team will host the first International Military Sports Council (CISM) women’s tournament, scheduled for Oct. 3-6, also at Ventura County Naval Base at Port Hueneme.
