BRUNSSUM, Netherlands – Brenda Broadwater scored a game-high 12 points, and Sara Sawyer, who scored four points, came up with six steals and five blocked shots Saturday as the AFNORTH Lady Lions outgunned the Bitburg Lady Barons, 26-14, in a non-regional basketball game.

Mercedes Ash added eight points for the Lady Lions (3-2 overall), whose defense allowed no Bitburg player to score as many as five points.

The game was the first of the 2011 portion of the schedule for both teams. The Lady Lions’ next test will come Friday night, when the two-time defending European Division III champion Brussels Lady Brigands visit for a Region I game.

The Lady Lions are scheduled to play Region I games exclusively from that point on until a return game at Bitburg on Feb. 19, then move on to the European Division II tournament Feb. 23-26 in Mannheim.

Bitburg (0-3), which got a team-high four points each from Brianna Lackey and Lamonica Williams, also opens its regional campaign this week. They’re scheduled to play at winless Ramstein on Wednesday in the Region II opener for both of those teams.
