Cameron Henry drove in the first run for an official Department of Defense Dependents Schools-Europe baseball team Saturday, but the rest of the day went against the Rota Admirals as they lost to an adult team, Silva’s Hospital Bandits, 27-1 in Rota, Spain.

The Bandits, according to Rota sponsor Robert Stovall, are composed of former players who wore the Rota uniform when the high school baseball program was run by the military’s Youth Sports organization. The upcoming season is the first in which baseball is an official sport run by the school system.

Rota’s remoteness from other DODDS schools, however, forced it to schedule the adult team. That point was underscored last spring, when the YS organizers of the European high school championships declined to invite Rota, the 2007 European champion, to defend its title in the 2008 tourney at Ramstein.

"We will play a version of this team (the Bandits) about 10 times before we make it to England (on April 24-25)," Stovall wrote in a Monday e-mail.

Henry’s RBI, Stovall reported, came in the Admirals’ first turn at bat. Darius Brown, who reached first on a walk and stole second, scored the run. Henry also pitched four innings of middle relief, according to Stovall, striking out five.
